Universal Me

This is the time for school reports. My son got his first one – an A4 page full of text. 40 years ago, my fist school report contained four sentences. But in fact these two are quite identically. In the first class you still get a universal evaluation, but in further forms you get grades. But today these grades are individualized. This sounds funny to me. An individualized grade is just like a championship without comparing performance. And what is the meaning of an individualized grade other than a number, individually ordered? If the framing is individual, the content of…

From Waste to Fuel

From Waste to Fuel. New insights into the function of lactate in physiology   Feature by CDeuker     1       Content 1      Content 2      Abstract 3      References 4      End of Pipe – the former explanation 5      The Lactate Shuttle Revolution 2       Abstract Lately I read a paper about new insights into the function of lactate that really thrilled me [Wahl, P.; 2009]. In this paper, everything I learned at University about energy physiology in muscles was upside down and together with this new paradigm, some problems between theory and practical experiences we used to discuss vanished instantly. This S2n –…

Culture or Nature

Culture

Nature After a week of skiing I still enjoy the impressions of being in nature. The huge alpine mountains contrary to tiny streets and houses down in the sunny valleys. This contrast combined with a change in position let me focus on fundamental experiences of being alive. Reinhold Messner described this motivation for climbing as the two elementary feelings of humans: While climbing up, nature seems to be infinite, huge and untamable. You feel like a speck of dust compared with these dimensions and power, with the risk of being smashed and erased immediately. But on the top, it is…

not Australia

Not Australia

Where do you come from? I’m from Austria. Oh yeah -last summer we went to Sydney and later in the outback… Sorry – not Australia! I had several situation like this – mostly funny. But sometimes uncomfortable, especially for me. Because I’m a guy with some kind of migration background. Saying ‘I’m from Austria’ is not the whole truth. I was born in Germany and grew up there. From that perspective I’m a socialized German, but holding another nationality. This is especially obvious when I come ‘home’ in vacations. For the ‘Alpine Aborigines’ I’m definitely ‘Piefke’ – very German. On…

Taming Savage Design – S2n-16-04-01

Taming Savage Design. Methodological Implications on Wildlife-Biological Design Planning by CDeuker, Dialectical UNiversal ConsultANcy, www.dundotcan.de Abstract Design Planning is a crucial objective in every science. In this paper fundamental methodological implications to design planning in wildlife monitoring are discussed. Starting with reflections about the ambition of wildlife monitoring, the semantical interconnectivity of ‘nature’ and ‘culture’ gives the first hint to multidimensionality and ambiguity in the focused area. Beyond this vagueness there is another problematic issue for methodical aspects in wildlife-biological design planning, that is non linearity of systems, stating the question of ‘why measuring?’ In addition to academic knowledge, decision…

ESAI Estimator for Aerial Imagery – S2n-15-05-01

Density estimation for Wildlife Monitoring using vertical imagery in aerial field research. by Christoph Deuker; Dialectical UNiversal ConsultANcy www.dundotcan.de; mailto:dun.can@dundotcan.de Ulrich Franke; aerosense – remote sensing www.aerosense.de; mailto:u.franke@aerosense.de Abstract A frequently used design for aerial wildlife monitoring is strip sampling. Distance sampling methods are a powerful tool for estimating abundance of biological populations in line transects design. In this paper we want to find a way to use this tool for vertical aerial imagery subject to spatial camera observation contrary to a centerline monitoring. Introduction For a lot of terrestrial monitoring research it is straight forward to accept a centerline…
